Snow Roads Scenic Routes

SNOW ROADS SCENIC ROUTE

Distance: 90 miles (145 km) Start: Grantown-on-Spey End: Blairgowrie
This year is an especially exciting one for Scotland when it comes to road trips with the unveiling of the brand new Snow Roads Scenic Route. Due to launch officially later this year, this stunner of a route weaves through the outstandingly beautiful landscapes of the eastern Cairngorms as well as the charming Highland towns of Royal Deeside including Braemar, Ballater and Tomintoul. Scaling the highest public road in Great Britain – the eponymous Snow Road – this driving route offers everything from castles to distilleries, tumbling waterfalls to free-roaming herds of deer. It’s also a dream to Instagram. Pull over at its three ‘Scenic Route Installations’, outdoor artworks that merge seamlessly with the surrounding landscape and are designed just so to allow you to capture that perfect shot.

Spring in the Cairngorms National Park

2nd April 2018
Orphan Annie has just delivered the first lambs of Spring at the Highland Lodge Estate and it's triplets!!

Spring is a fantastic time to visit the Cairngorms National Park.
This season is a time of days getting longer and the spring sunshine bringing growth and greenery everywhere with buds bursting and leaves unfolding. Birdsong reaches a peak and many flowers appear, in turn attracting insect-life, including bees and butterflies. Animals that hibernated over winter appear on the first warm days of spring so keep an eye out in early Spring for hedgehogs, newly emerged queen bees, frogs, toads, grass snakes, lizards and adders.

Many woodland flowers are at their best before the leaves are fully open on the trees. If you find carpets of bluebellswood anemones, wild garlic, wood sorrel and early purple orchids you can be sure it is an ancient woodland and likely to be good for many other kinds of wildlife too. So make sure you go on a Spring woodland walk – it will keep you healthy too!

Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival May 2018

How do whisky or whiskey drinkers drink theirs?

1.    Pour "two fingers" of whisky into a glass ...
2.    Use the colour of the whisky to gauge its age. ...
3.    Lift the glass to your nose for a smell. ...
4.    Place a few drops of clean water into your whisky. ...
5.    Taste the whisky and compare it to its smell. ...
6.    Keep any added ice to a minimum.

"Step one, swill glass Step two, big sniff Step three, take a big, long sip: heaven"

"To drink scotch, you don't bring air in to your mouth like you do with wine. You take a sip, hold it in your mouth for a couple of seconds (some people chew on it a little) then swallow. That's when the flavour hits. Adding a couple of drops of water takes the edge off the alcohol, and makes the drink much smoother."
